Thorn Street
Upper Fernwood Estate in Newlands, a suburb of exciting tension that has a micro-climate of extreme rainfall and some of the country’s most classic and modern homes that stand aside the most revered natural vistas and protected ecology in the southern hemisphere. This contemporary design of this home is amplified by the drama of its surrounds, the Table Mountain Nature Reserve.
There is continuity between the natural mountain reserve views and the interior material palette of the architecture. The off-shutter concrete shear walls are reminiscent of the towering Table Mountain’s rock face that forms a backdrop to the house. The bedrooms of the front street façade have bi-parting windows which reveal open corners that are supported by an external concrete frame.
The project was the cover feature of the last published issue of the Property Magazine Western Cape in 2005 and remains an icon of Newlands to date.
